SOS Wholesale: £6.5m unsecured claims as administration time costs reach £1.58m

“The SOS Wholesale administration has left estimated unsecured claims of £6.5 million, with administrators reporting that a dividend to unsecured creditors is highly unlikely.”

SOS Wholesale Limited was a discount wholesaler supplying food, drinks, confectionery, pet food, household products and toiletries to retailers across the UK. Its head office, warehouse and distribution centre were based on Stores Road, Derby, with additional premises in Barnsley.

The company entered administration in September 2025, with Interpath’s Richard Harrison and Howard Smith appointed. The administration has now been extended for another year, until 7 September 2027, to complete remaining asset recoveries and resolve outstanding tax, costs and statutory matters.

The business ceased trading following their appointment. Most of its 83 employees were made redundant immediately, with all remaining staff leaving by the end of October 2025.

Sales ledger assigned to Novuna

First-ranking secured creditor Novuna Business Cash Flow was owed approximately £2.2 million when administrators were appointed.

The company’s sales ledger had been assigned to Novuna before the administration. Collections from those debts therefore go towards repaying Novuna, with only any surplus becoming available to the administration estate. Despite this security, administrators remain uncertain whether Novuna will recover its lending in full.

Former shareholders Mark and Steven Beckett hold second-ranking security for potentially £1.8 million relating to the company’s sale in 2021. They are also expected to suffer a shortfall.

Employee preferential claims of £87,321 and HMRC’s secondary preferential claim of £56,708 are not expected to receive a distribution.

Total unsecured claims are now estimated at £6.5 million. Based on current estimates, administrators consider a dividend to these creditors highly unlikely.

SOS Wholesale administration time costs reach £1.58m

Administrators have recorded approximately £1.58 million in time costs since their appointment.

During the latest six-month reporting period, almost £125,000 was recorded for approximately 205 hours of work—an average rate of £609 an hour.

Investigations into the company’s affairs have also continued to establish whether action against third parties could increase recoveries.

The SOS Wholesale website states that Dairyfresh purchased the intellectual property from SOS Wholesale and now operates the brand.

NPD Comment

The SOS Wholesale administration has already generated £1.58 million in recorded time costs, yet unsecured creditors owed an estimated £6.5 million are highly unlikely to receive anything. The process has now been extended for another year, with further costs still to come.

How is this level of cost justified for a business that ceased trading when administrators were appointed? At an average rate of £609 an hour during the latest reporting period, what measurable benefit is this process delivering to creditors?

For suppliers and other unsecured creditors left carrying the losses, the administration continues, and the costs continue, while the prospect of receiving any payment remains remote.

Q. Why does Novuna receive collections from the sales ledger?

A.The sales ledger had been assigned as security to Novuna Business Cash Flow for SOS Wholesale’s factoring facilities. Novuna will collect the outstanding customer debts to recover the approximately £2.2 million owed, plus costs, before handing the remaining ledger back to the administrators.

Q. Where can I get more information on the SOS Wholesale administration?

A. The administrators’ reports are available free of charge from Companies House. Search for SOS Wholesale Limited, company number 08674904, and open its filing history to view the latest filed Administrators progress report.
